So you don't think you have the time

My daughter is currently doing a residency in Orthopedic Surguery at USC.  The path to becoming a surgeon is really an endurance sport in itself.  You have to sustain an intensity over many years really a decade of undergrad, medical school, residency.

The residency itself is long hours.   I know my daughter packs nutrition for her days in the hospital (which can be 17 even 24 hours) much like I do on a longer endurance event.  She has to manage sleep, training and her mental focus. One off day a week (the rest day).    I have much respect for those going through a residency.

The other day my daughter sent me a quick text.  Apparently, one of her fellow Ortho residents (in year 5) is a triathlete.  Well that is impressive in itself.  Must require very strict time management.   But what blew me a way and reset my perspective on what is possible is that the resident is Cory Mayfield who just won the Ironman World Championships in his age group 30-34.

Now that is crazy.  I haven't met Corey but I can't imagine how it is even possible to train the amount it takes to do an ironman let alone participate in worlds but to win it while being in an Ortho Residency program is truly hard to get my head around.  I hope to get an intro and learn his secretes.

So the next time you think you don't feel like you have the time to train remember Cory.

Congrats.  Impressive.
